The Origin of Rubies is a short story following a spoiled young prince whose stubborn defiance of his mother leads him far out to sea — and deep beneath it. When he spots enormous rubies floating near a mysterious vortex, he cannot resist taking one. That single gem sets off a chain of events involving a king's lovesick daughter, an impossible demand, and a descent into an underwater palace where the god Shiva sleeps and a headless woman's sorrow gives the ocean its red gems.
