The Origins of the First Order

After the Galactic Empire's defeat in Return of the Jedi, the shattered remnants eventually regrouped and formed the First Order. When this concept was first introduced in the Star Wars saga it seemed very straightforward. As time has gone on more and more of the story has been revealed, the formation of the First Order is not as simple as we originally thought.
