The Owners are to Blame (Ep. 86)

We are back for the 2022 season! Only, there is no season, at least not yet. That is because the owner-imposed lockout of MLB players has reached its fourth month, and there is no end in sight. It has been a not-so-shocking display of selfishness on the part of team owners. They have budged in their demands, but only slightly, and they have remained steadfast in their goal of continued suppression of player salaries. The latest proposal from owners saw them ask for a CBT threshold of $220 million for the next three seasons, an insultingly low offer that the players rejected it out of hand. This past week also saw commissioner Rob Manfred announce that the start of the season will be cancelled with no plans to make up the six games that are axed. We will see if that stands to pass if the owners wish to prorate player salaries as a result. It is unclear where we go from here. The two sides are expected to continue meeting behind closed doors in New York, but there is no specific timeline. What does seem clear is this: the league wants more playoff teams while the players want a bigger piece of the revenue pie. The unfortunate middle ground is going to be a massive playoff field in exchange for a higher CBT threshold. According to Manfred, this is what fans want. There does not seem to be any evidence to support that, but the sooner we accept the reality of the situation the easier it may be to swallow. On this week’s episode, the guys talks about the labor negotiations and explain why the owners are screwing the players, and why the players are happy to get screwed, just a little less than they currently have endured. If you enjoy this, you can subscribe to the podcast here on Substack to get it delivered right to your inbox.
