The Pac-12 Conference Will Cease To Exist After 2023 + Big Ten Expansion | College Football 2023

The Pac-12 Conference is dead. Yesterday, George Kliavkoff tried to keep the conference together by pulling together an exclusive TV media rights deal with Apple TV, a move that I think was last-ditch and foolish. Pac-12 Football has grown on and off the field in the past 12 months, with Utah winning the conference in both 2021 and 2022 and Oregon, Oregon State, and Washington winning their bowl games last year. However, due to poor payout and a delayed media rights negotiation, USC, UCLA, and Colorado have announced their departures from the Pac-12. Kliavkoff promises that he is looking out for the best interests of the Pac-12 Conference, however, Apple TV's growth has stagnated in 2023 so far, and with key teams already leaving the conference, this limited TV deal does more harm than good to the nine teams that remain in what is now a rump state edition of the Pac-12. The Big 12 is reportedly courting Arizona to join what is currently a 13-team league starting in 2024, and the Wildcats want Arizona State and Utah to join the Big 12 Conference with them, bringing the Big 12 to 16 total teams if all goes according to Arizona's desire. I think the Big Ten will turn out to be the largest winner of the Pac-12's demise. Oregon and Washington are great football programs and they also hold membership in the American Association of Universities (AAU), of which all Big Ten schools but Nebraska are a part. I conclude that because of their AAU membership and their high place in the College Football world, Oregon Football, and Washington Football will take the field in 2024 as members of the Big Ten Conference. Other Big Ten additions might include Notre Dame, Stanford, California, and Utah, provided the Big 12 doesn't add the Utah Utes first. Sadly, conference realignment has claimed its first Power 5 victim, and I don't think it will stop until the Big Ten and SEC have a firmer grip on the sport.
