A long-distance trucker pulls into an all-night Texaco off Route 17 in western Tennessee, a place he's stopped a hundred times. But tonight the payphone by the air pump is ringing when he steps out of the cab. He answers it. The voice on the other end knows his name, knows what he's carrying in the trailer, knows the date his daughter was born. The voice says it's been waiting for him. The trucker spends the next hour standing in the yellow cone of the gas station light, listening to the phone ring again and again, each time a different voice, each time a message from someone he cannot possibly know.
