The Pedestal, the Armor, and the System: Beyond Detachment

Why do we cut people off—and when is distance actually freedom? The goal isn’t endless access. Acceptance does not mean reconciliation, and compassion does not mean proximity. The deeper question is whether we can let people be who they are while deciding, from internal authority rather than emotional reactivity, how close they should be. Because perhaps freedom isn’t saying, “I need you gone so I can be okay.” It’s being able to say: “This is who you are. This is who I am. And this is the distance at which I can meet you without abandoning myself.”
