The People-Pleaser Hangover

from Radiant Rise with Michelle Baldwin · host Michelle Baldwin

You finally say no. You set the boundary. You choose yourself. Then somebody replies with one terrifying little word:“OK.”And suddenly your boundary is on trial.Have you ever finally said no to something…and then spent the next hour trying to convince yourself to say yes? That’s what I call the people-pleaser hangover. It’s the guilt after the boundary. The overthinking after the no.The immediate urge to explain yourself, apologize, change your answer, or figure out whether the other person is upset. And sometimes it’s ridiculous.Someone texts:“OK.”Two letters. That’s it.Meanwhile, my brain has opened an entire FBI investigation. Was that an angry OK?Why are both letters capitalized? Why isn’t there an emoji?Did I upset them?Should I send another message?😂But underneath the humor is something I’m still learning:Someone else being disappointed does not automatically mean I did something wrong. In this episode, I also talk about one of the biggest people-pleasing lessons I learned years ago.I volunteered because I genuinely wanted to help. Then helping slowly became responsibility.Responsibility became carrying too much. And eventually I had to recognize that there was a difference between contributing to something I cared about…and becoming responsible for keeping the entire thing afloat. That experience taught me something I still have to remind myself:Being needed does not automatically mean I am the person who has to do it.I can care.I can help.I can contribute. And I can still have limits.Maybe healing from people-pleasing doesn’t mean I’ll never feel guilty after saying no.Maybe it means I can feel the guilt…and leave the boundary exactly where I put it.✨ IN THIS EPISODE* Why saying yes can sometimes feel easier than saying no* Saying “no problem” when it is absolutely a problem* Why a simple “OK” text can trigger hours of overthinking* The urge to immediately take a boundary back* Learning to pause before automatically agreeing* The difference between helping and becoming responsible for everything* What an overwhelming volunteer experience taught me about capacity* The guilt that can come after stepping away* The thought pattern: “If I don’t do it, who will?”* Resentment caused by saying yes when you really mean no* Why other people’s disappointment can feel like an emergency* Learning that everyone does not have to agree with your decision* Why guilt isn’t always an instruction* Setting a boundary even when it still feels uncomfortable💌 A NOTE FROM MEPeople-pleasing is something I’m still learning my way out of.I don’t want to become someone who stops caring.I like helping people.I like being dependable.I like contributing. The problem comes when caring turns into carrying everything.Or when saying no makes me so uncomfortable that I change a perfectly reasonable decision just to make the guilt disappear.I’m learning that discomfort doesn’t always mean something is wrong.Sometimes it simply means:I’m doing something differently than I used to.And maybe that’s enough reason to leave the boundary where I put it.— Michelle Get full access to Radiant Rise | Michelle Baldwin at radiantrisemystory.substack.com/subscribe
