The Person First with Gary Hayes

  In the days following the 7/7 London bombings in 2005, acting sergeant Gary Hayes of the British Transport police (BTP) was assigned to the temporary mortuary where bodies were being brought for identification. “When we got bodies in they’d been down in those tunnels for two or three days, the decomposition, I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,” he said. But it was a less visceral sight that proved to be the trigger for the chronic, complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) he developed that he believes eventually cost him his job – a card written by a father to his son, who had been killed in the blast. Gary has been vital in the setting up and drive of the charity PTSD999 helping those suffering in the emergency services.
