THE PHASES OF PARENTING Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. (NKJV) Ecclesiastes 3:1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: (NIV) 1. Discipline Phase (0-5) Hebrews 12:5-11 - And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a] 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (NIV) Proverbs 29:17 Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire. (NIV) 2. Training Phase (5-12) 1. Negative training 2. Positive training 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (NIV) Deuteronomy 6:6-9 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (NIV) “Teaching kids to count is fine, but teaching them what counts is best.” Bob Talbert 1 Corinthians 11:1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (NIV) 3. Coaching Phase (12-18) Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. (NIV) 4. Friendship Phase (19 and beyond)
