So, last week we talked about pickleball, and the great benefits of this fun sport, which are not just physical but also social as well. But you know what can happen next: you're excited, you're out there on the court every day and then, suddenly, whoomp - something pops.Dr. Greg Rubin is a physician specializing in pain management and sports medicine, and is known here in Naples as, "The Pickleball Doctor." Dr. Rubin did his training at the University of Connecticut and the University of Kentucky, working with athletes and specializing in sports medicine. He's spent the past seven years doing primarily non-operative orthopedics in Naples, for patients of all ages, but he's here today with a particular focus on the listeners of this podcast: our seniors! Dr. Greg talks about the types of injuries seniors typically face in sports, emphasizing that many are acute or chronic injuries. We discuss pain management strategies, the risks of long-term use of pain medications, and non-pharmaceutical treatments like physical therapy and injections. We also cover the importance of warm-ups and conditioning to prevent injuries, specifically for the elderly and those newly engaged in sports like pickleball. We're here to encourage seniors to be active, to participate and embrace having the time and opportunity to try new things. Let's just not forget the practical side though too, of knowing how to safely participate in sports and set realistic expectations about recovery and pain management. Now, get out there and have fun!Gregory Rubin, DO - Nonsurgical Orthopedics---Reach out to the show by visiting our website, weareoldpodcast.comand send me your thoughts and suggestions at [email protected].
