The Pirate Book 2 Chapter 1
from The Walter Scott Library Hosted by Sir Walter Scott
In which the company at Burgh-Westra partakes in a quaint and ancient custom of consulting a sibyl, the formidable Norna of the Fitful-head, whose solemn and mysterious oracles cast a shadow of awe and contemplation upon even the most sceptical. The mingling of superstition and conviviality reveals much of the islanders' character and the gentle melancholy of their traditions, while Norna’s sudden and inexplicable disappearance leaves a lingering enigma among the guests.
