🇺🇸 The Pirot Bishops (Deep Dive)

The Pirot region and the Ponišavlje area have historically served as a significant spiritual epicenter of the Serbian Orthodox Church, preserving the St. Sava ethos through close ties with Mount Athos and other major monasteries. Four exceptional spiritual luminaries and bishops emerged from this region, combining high education with deep devotion to their homeland. Bishop Kiril Živković was a prominent enlightener and the author of the famous Temska "Collection" (Zbornik) from 1764, which served as a forerunner to the modern literary language. Bishop Dr. Venijamin Taušanović distinguished himself through Christian asceticism, voluntary medical service during wartime, and by giving away his family wealth to support the poor and refugees. Bishop Dr. Vasilije Kostić was a confessor of the faith who suffered imprisonment alongside Bishop Nikolaj and Patriarch Gavrilo during the occupation, later making great sacrifices to rebuild the destroyed Eparchy of Banja Luka. Bishop Dr. Jovan Ilić was the first doctor of theology from the region, renowned for his diplomatic mission, the restoration of the Nis Cathedral, and introducing strict order into church administration.
