Pirot and the Ponišavlje region represent an area with a rich historical continuity through the centuries, whose development is traced from ancient times all the way to accelerated modernization in the 19th century. Positioned along the strategically important Roman road Via Militaris, this city developed from the ancient fortress Turres and a medieval Serbian stronghold into a prominent Ottoman commercial center. Throughout the centuries of Ottoman rule, the local population managed to preserve its identity and economic strength thanks to well-developed crafts, trade, and the early establishment of Serbian schools. Following its final liberation in 1877 and the citizens' successful struggle against annexation to Bulgaria, the city officially became an integral part of the Principality of Serbia.
