The Playground Equipment on Old Winchester Road

In the summer of 2017, I took a detour through the town of Bluefield, West Virginia, trying to beat the heat by driving back roads with the windows down. That's when I saw it — a full-sized playground, slide and swings and merry-go-round, sitting all alone in a field off Old Winchester Road. No houses nearby, no school, no park. Just a slide facing the road and a swing set with both seats swaying in still air. I pulled over because something about it felt wrong, and the longer I looked, the worse it got.
