The Porcelain Music Box of Pecan Creek

In the summer of 2017, just outside Pecan Creek, Texas, I met a woman who bought a porcelain music box at a yard sale. It played a lullaby she didn't recognize. Then it started playing on its own, in the middle of the night, from inside a locked trunk. When she opened the trunk, the music stopped. But the box inside was warm. And the dancer had turned its head. I sat with her on her porch as she told me about the dreams that followed — of a little girl in a yellow dress, pressing her hands against a window, wanting to come in. The lullaby is still there, under the floorboards. It's humming now, she said.
