On a humid August evening in 2018, Luna is invited to a small antique shop in the town of Stillwater Creek, Oklahoma, by a woman named Margaret Harlow. Margaret has a photograph—a tintype from 1893—that she says was taken by a traveling photographer who never developed his plates. In the image, a young girl in a white dress stands beside a porcelain doll. The doll's face is cracked in the same place as one Margaret found in her late mother's attic. Luna examines the photo under a magnifying glass and notices the girl's reflection in a mirror behind her: she is not holding the doll. The doll is holding her.
