The Power of Idols

from universitychurchofchrist · host Rich Little

September 1 - The Power of Idols Synopsis: What do we worship? Marriage, spouses, and boyfriends/girlfriends? In the absence of a right view of God, it’s easy to look for a substitute. Husbands, wives, and other people become substitute gods, and we can fall into the trap of idolizing our relationships and marriages. We impose expectations on others that only God can fulfill, and when they fail us, we believe the relationship has failed. We have an unrealistic view of our relationships. Marriage has become an idol in the same ways that image, fame, money, and success have become idols. God alone is the idol; our marriages and relationships are not. Our marriages and relationships are intended to become expressions of our love for God, not God themselves. Text: Ezekiel 14:1-11 – God’s hunger to be the only idol in the heart of his people. No substitute is possible.
