The Power Of Learning Teams - with Brent Sutton

from The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast · host Colin Nottage

In this week’s show, Colin talks to author, safety advocate and fellow Safety FM podcast host, Brent Sutton, about his fascinating new book devoted to Learning Teams, and how they can be used to great effect in order to drive improvement and create impact in our own organisations. KEY TAKEAWAYS Safety investigations have the unfortunate duty to put people back into the centre of the event or accident. This can lead to a re-traumatising effect,, which is very unhealthy. Accountability in the wake of an event, is crucial in not just moving past the event and working through any improvements required, but also in reinstalling a vital sense of trust that an event may cause to be lost. Learning teams encourage functional diversity. It encourages people to explore their view of something. This leads to narratives taking on new meanings as it is experienced through new perspectives. As adults in the process of learning, development comes not in the form of layered learning, but through the piecemeal process of filling gaps in our learning. We must first recognise the gaps before we can take on the learning. BEST MOMENTS ‘A lot of investigations put people back at the centre of the event’ ‘Because of our fixation on prevention, we actually create a bias’ ‘A hazard doesn’t have emotion’ ‘It’s “Why” than can make a difference between life and death'  VALUABLE RESOURCES The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/vn/podcast/the-interesting-health-safety-podcast/id1467771449   Brent Sutton LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/brentsuttonnz/?originalSubdomain=nz Safety Associates - https://www.safetyassociates.co.nz/our-people.html ABOUT THE HOST Colin Nottage ‘Making health and safety as important as everything else we do.’ This is the belief that Colin is passionate about and through his consultancy Influential Management Group (IMG) is able to spread into industry.
