"The Power of Listening: Cultivating Righteousness”

from "Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today · host Y.E.S. Jesus Youth Encountering Savior Jesus

February 25, 2025 Daily Devotion: "The Power of Listening: Cultivating Righteousness”  James 1:19-20 New Living Translation  19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 20 Human anger[a] does not produce the righteousness[b] Goddesires. James 1:19-20 (NIV) states, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” In this passage, James teaches the importance of communication and emotional regulation in our relationships.Being "quick to listen" signifies the value of understanding others before reacting. In contrast, being "slow to speak" and "slow to become angry" highlights the need for patience and humility. Human anger often leads to conflict and strife, which is contrary to the righteousness God calls us to embody. Historically, this wisdom was crucial in the early church, where disputes often arose among believers. By practicing these principles, we foster unity and reflect Christ’s love in our interactions. Just as Proverbs 15:1 tells us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Therefore, let us strive for meekness in our conversations. As we meditate on these verses, let’s pray for wisdom to listen well and for patience in our responses, asking God to help us reflect His righteousness in our daily lives.
