The Prayer We Walked Into
from Between Bread and Stone · host Stephen R. Brewer, PsyD
On the Seventh Sunday of Easter, the Church stands in the strange gap between Ascension and Pentecost. Jesus has gone. The Spirit has not yet arrived in flame. The disciples wait in the upper room, carrying words they could not fully understand when they first heard them. John 17 lets us overhear Jesus praying for his friends. He does not ask the Father to make them powerful, successful, dominant, or impressive. His prayer is simpler and harder: protect them, keep them one, hold them together through what comes next. Imperial Christianity has often inverted that prayer into a demand for institutional self-preservation. Budgets, buildings, brands, hierarchies, and doctrinal control get protected while vulnerable people are asked to bear the cost of “unity.” Jesus prayed for the people in the room, not the machinery later built around them. This episode sits with protection, oneness, and the holy threshold before Whitsunday. For everyone waiting in an upper room of your own life, unsure what comes next: You are welcome here.
