The Press That Saved a People's Story

In the early 1500s, Denmark's oldest chronicle - a sprawling history of kings, myths, and heroes written centuries before by Saxo Grammaticus - had nearly vanished, surviving in only a single known copy tucked away in an archbishop's collection. A young Danish scholar named Christiern Pedersen, studying in Paris at the exact center of the still-new printing revolution, refused to let it disappear. After years of letters that went unanswered and searches through Denmark's libraries and monasteries that turned up nothing, an unexpected letter finally led him to a copy - which he carried back to Paris and, with printer Jodocus Badius, turned into the first printed edition of Gesta Danorum in 1514. That edition became the foundation for every translation and every reader of Saxo's history since, including the tale of a Danish prince named Amleth that would later become Shakespeare's Hamlet.
