In 1735 a German immigrant printer sat in a New York jail for setting the type of a paper that criticized the royal governor. By every rule of law then in force, the governor was going to win. How twelve jurors did something the law did not permit, and how American press freedom traces a clear line back to that morning.Field Notes on the Republic was written and read by Michael Fowler.
