The Problem With Anti-Barking Collars

The focus of this episode is to discuss the problems with using an anti-barking collar on your dog to correct the problem of excessive barking. As a dog trainer and behaviour expert, Anne has first hand seen the fall-out of using these anti-barking collars on dogs. All though they are often seen as a "quick-fix" to the problem of excessive barking sometimes they don't work or they can cause more issues that then need to be addressed. Anti-barking collars work by providing a punishment, an electric shock or spray of something unpleasant, when the dog barks. In this podcast Anne explains that with use of these collars there is always a risk that your dog may make an association that you didn’t intend. They can relate the punishment to something else in the environment, an item or even a person.
