The Professor Chapter XVII
from The Brontë Library Hosted by The Brontë Sisters
In which the narrator endeavours to unravel the origins and ambitions of Mdlle. Henri, a young woman of mixed English and Swiss parentage, whose aspirations to become a governess contrast sharply with her humble means and present occupation. Through measured conversation, her thoughts on language, education, and the contrasting influences of different cultures and religions emerge with gentle earnestness and subtle insight.
