The Qualification Of The High Priest And The Warning About Dull Hearing Hebrews 5 Explained

In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through Hebrews Chapter 5 — the bridge chapter that completes the high priest argument and then pivots into the most personally confronting warning in the letter so far.The chapter opens with the two requirements of a high priest: taken from among men, so he can genuinely identify with the people he represents, and appointed by God, not self-assigned. Jesus meets both — appointed by the Father through Psalm 2 and Psalm 110, named a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. That name, planted here, will be developed fully in Chapters 7 through 10.Then the passage that carries the most weight in the chapter. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and was heard for his godly fear. Although he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered. Having been made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation to all those who obey him.He learned. Not performed, not demonstrated. Learned. Obedience that holds when everything in the situation is pressing against it is not a quality that exists in the abstract — it develops through the specific moments that require it. The Son went through those moments. And what he learned now serves everyone who comes to him.Then the pivot. About Melchizedek we have much to say and it is hard to explain — because you have become dull of hearing. By this time you should be teachers. You need milk, not solid food. Solid food is for those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.The capacity has diminished because it has not been used. Not a dramatic failure.
