A king's extravagant spending leaves his 10-year-old son with a bankrupt kingdom. To restore the treasury, the chief counselor proposes auctioning the boy king off in marriage. The auction attracts wealthy but unattractive women. Distraught, the king finds a magical book in his bed, revealing a Slave of the Royal Bedstead. The Slave provides a purse that always contains a quarter and advises the king to call off the wedding. The counselor, however, claims to have lost the auction money. The king, using the magical purse, insists on repaying the spurned bride, Mary Ann, in quarters, forcing the counselor into a tedious, unending task as punishment for his carelessness.
