The real problem with Lecrae idolizing John Piper
from THE UN-SILENT CHURCH · host Roosevelt Community Church
In this episode of the Unsilent Church, we discuss Lecrae's recent video about his experience and what he called "idolatry" along his journey. A lot of people could frame Lecrae's video about John Piper as a deconstruction story; but in this episode we contend that the wall he hit was built by the theology handed to many in Christian hip-hop and young, black and reformed circles often felt more revisionist than reformed—especially in cases where it involved social issues. Drawing from an article from Anthony Bradley, the problem was never really Piper, specifically. Piper was just positioned at the center of an industrial complex that that gave men like Lecrae a toolkit that was inadequate to address or help him navigate the real world he was living in and it begs the questions that if the gospel can't hold its own when we're navigating the streets, is that the gospel that Jesus really preached?
