People love to complain about the declining quality of movies, music, books, and art. But what if we're asking the wrong question?The inspiration for this episode came from a post on Threads by @Tanviberwah: “Everybody wants to talk about declining quality of books and music and movies and etc etc. Nobody wants to talk about the economic conditions of writers and editors and designers and musicians and etc etc impacting cultural innovation.”That idea immediately resonated with me. We often celebrate innovation after it happens, but rarely examine the conditions that make innovation possible in the first place. As economic pressures increase and more people find themselves working multiple jobs just to get by, what happens to creativity, experimentation, and the freedom to take risks?I explore the relationship between economic stability, creativity, innovation, and play.
