The Real Reason You're Sabotaging Your Success (And It's Not What You Think)

from Empowered Way Podcast · host Kathryn Eriksen

Hello Empowered Wayers!Picture this: We're sitting in our favorite corner booth at that cozy café downtown, steam rising from our lattes, and you've just told me about your latest business frustration..."I know I should be charging more," you say, stirring your drink a little too vigorously. "Everyone tells me my prices are too low. But every time I try to raise them, I feel like I'm being greedy. Like I'm taking advantage of people."Sound familiar? Here's what I've learned after working with hundreds of women entrepreneurs: Your money problems aren't really about money. They're about the stories running in the background of your mind – stories so automatic you don't even realize they're there. Why Your Brain Loves a Good Story (Even When It's Sabotaging You)Lisa Cron, the brilliant author of "Story Genius," explains something fascinating about how our brains work. We don't experience life as a series of random events. Instead, our minds are constantly weaving everything into a narrative – asking "What does this mean?" and "What should I do about it?"The problem? The stories we tell ourselves about money were often written when we were seven years old, overhearing our parents argue about bills. Or when we were twelve and learned that "good girls don't ask for too much." Or when we were twenty-two and watched a friend's business fail. These aren't just memories floating around harmlessly. They're active programs running your financial decisions right now, today, in ways you might not even recognize.Meet Your Money Story's Main CharacterThis is where the Sacred Money Archetypes come in – and before you roll your eyes and say "Oh great, another personality test," hear me out.Think of archetypes not as boxes to squeeze yourself into, but as the main characters in the money stories you've been unconsciously living. Each archetype has its own internal narrative, its own fears, its own version of what "success" and "safety" look like.Let me tell you about Sarah, a brilliant marketing consultant who came to me frustrated that she was always broke despite having plenty of clients. When we dug into her money story, we discovered she was operating from what I call the "Nurturer" archetype.Sarah's unconscious story went like this: "If I charge what I'm really worth, I'll price out the small businesses who really need my help. Good people don't put profit before helping others. If I focus too much on money, I'll become one of those cold, greedy business owners I can't stand."See how that story was running her business? She was literally the protagonist in a tale where making money meant betraying her values. No wonder she kept sabotaging her own success. The Plot Twist That Changes EverythingHere's where Lisa Cron's insights about storytelling become powerful: Every compelling story needs a moment when the protagonist realizes their old way of thinking isn't working anymore. That's exactly what happens when you identify your dominant money archetype. For Sarah, the breakthrough came when she realized her Nurturer story had a fatal flaw. By undercharging, she wasn't actually helping more people – she was burning herself out and delivering lower-quality work because she was constantly stressed about money. Her attempt to be "good" was actually making her less effective at the thing she cared most about: helping her clients succeed. The real plot twist? When Sarah finally raised her rates and started operating from sovereignty instead of fear, she didn't become cold and greedy. She became more generous. She had the energy and resources to do her best work, and she started a scholarship program for women entrepreneurs who couldn't afford her services.Your Story, Your ChoiceThe beautiful thing about understanding your money archetype isn't that it explains everything about you – it's that it reveals the story you've been unconsciously following so you can consciously choose a better one.Maybe you're a "Maverick" who's been telling herself that structure and systems are boring, so you wing it financially and wonder why you're always stressed. Or an "Alchemist" who believes that if you just work hard enough, money will somehow take care of itself. Or an "Accumulator" whose story is that there's never enough, so you hoard resources instead of investing in growth. Each archetype comes with its own gifts and its own shadows. Every money personality is driven by a story of what is true. When you can see the story and accept the shadows, you regain your power. This beautiful idea is illustrated by the lunar eclipse half the world will see. The moon doesn’t resist the shadow of the earth, it allows it to pass by. And in the acceptance and release, the moon is still radiant and serene. The magic happens when you become aware of the story you've been living and start writing a new one – one where you can honor your values AND build a thriving business. The Next Chapter Starts NowI know this might sound too simple. "Just change your story and change your money situation?" But here's what I've learned: Our financial behaviors aren't random. They're remarkably consistent because they're following a script we learned long ago. When you understand that script – when you can see your money archetype's story clearly – you gain the power to edit it. To keep the parts that serve you and rewrite the parts that don't.That's not woo-woo thinking. That's neuroscience. That's how change actually happens in real life.So tell me – what story do you think your money decisions have been following? What if you became the conscious author of that story instead of just its unconscious actor?Your answer to that question changes the plot, your purpose, and your life’s trajectory. Ask yourself that question and allow the answers to bubble up. Write them down and allow the ideas to flow out onto the page. Please share your aha moments so we can learn together. To your prosperity,KathrynWant to discover your own Sacred Money Archetype story? I've written a short e-book with detailed stories for each archetype that will help you identify which narrative has been running your financial life.
