The Reality of the Immigration Law and L.A. Unrest (The Patrick Madrid Show)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

If you missed Patrick Madrid's full conversations about the immigration topic, you can get caught up here!   Hour 1   Hour 2     Hour 3     📜 What Does the Law Actually Say?   Patrick wanted to get clear on the actual legal status of immigration... no hearsay, just U.S. Code citations. Here's what he found:   📍 First illegal entry into the U.S. = Class B misdemeanor (up to 6 months in prison and/or fines).   📍 Reentry after deportation = Felony (up to 2 years... or 20 if you have a serious criminal history like drug trafficking or violent crimes).   📍 Fake documents = Big felony.    📍 Helping someone enter or stay illegally = Yep, that’s a felony too.   Patrick wasn’t being heavy-handed. He just emphasized that laws exist for a reason and that if we want to change them, there’s a process. As he quoted President Obama: “If you don’t like the law, change it.” Fair enough, right?     🏛️ Law & Compassion: Not Mutually Exclusive   Patrick stressed this again and again... compassion matters, especially for vulnerable folks. But he also pointed out that enforcing laws doesn't mean being cruel.    Let’s work for laws that are just and merciful. But in the meantime, we can’t pretend the laws don’t exist just because we don't like them.     🗣️ Steve from California Calls In   Steve, a security guy from L.A. with some real-life experience, painted a vivid picture:   He described scenes of chaos in downtown L.A.: graffiti, looting, even pallets of bricks supposedly set up for protests.    He expressed sadness and frustration, especially as a Latino man whose family came here legally.   He wasn’t denying that people are suffering, but he felt that many are taking advantage of the system and causing destruction, not seeking help.   He also made a poignant point: There are undocumented folks who have lived here for decades, working hard and raising families, and now face a scary future. It’s a messy, emotional, deeply human issue.     Big Takeaways   Law matters... not because we lack heart, but because without law, society crumbles. (“If someone breaks into your house, do you call the police or not?”)   Bad laws can and should be changed.   Compassion should never be optional.   He reminds us of Jesus’ words: “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s.” 🏛️ But also never forget to render unto God what is God’s: love, dignity, mercy.     The best way to listen to the Best of the Week is on our #1 Free Catholic App. It’s free and always will be!
