The Red and the White: A Family Saga of the American West
from MontanaHistoricalSociety · host MontanaHistoricalSociety
Southern Methodist University history professor Andrew Graybill discusses his book that details the remarkable story of a Montana family. John L. Clarke’s paternal grandfather, Malcolm, came to Montana as a fur trader and married Coth-co-co-na, the daughter of a Blackfeet chief. John Clarke’s father, Horace, was the son of Malcolm, who was killed by his wife’s cousin in 1869. His death was a significant factor leading up to the Marias, or Baker, massacre—the worst Native American massacre in Montana history. (Mar. 5, 2015)
