She maintains a full-time private practice in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Dr. Messina the author of several books, including Misogyny, Projective Identification, and Mentalization, and, Aftermath: Healing from the Trump Presidency. Today she is here to discuss her new book, Resurgence of Global Populism: A Psychoanalytic Study of Projective Identification, Blame-Shifting, and the Corruption of Democracy, from Routledge Press. Dr. Messina discusses the phenomenon of authoritarian leaders across the globe, in Hungary, the UK, Poland, New Zealand and Australia, the USA and other nations. Dr. Messina takes a psychoanalytic approach to the process of splitting, and projective identification, as well as blame shifting that these leaders utilize to manipulate public opinion and to exploit fear and weakness in their followers. She also offers a point of hope for averting continued tribalism by community engagement and connection across communities and political dividing lines.
