Remote (2010), written and directed by Marc Roussel and produced by Red Sneakers Media.It was a massive hit on the indie horror festival circuit back then, picking up a ton of awards and nominations (including a Director’s Guild of Canada nod).The PremiseThe film plays out like a tight, high-concept psychological thriller with a fantastic time-loop/paradox hook:A man is trapped inside his house during a brutal winter snowstorm. Suddenly, his old television set turns on, exposing a live feed of a young woman who can see and talk back to him. They quickly realize they are standing in the exact same house—but she is living 30 years in the past (1978 vs. 2008). When he uncovers that she is about to be brutally murdered by a faceless, slasher-style killer stalking her isolated apartment, he has to use their strange connection to try and rewrite history and save her life.Why It ResonatedRoussel explicitly noted that he wanted to blend the claustrophobic, paranoid atmosphere of Roman Polanski’s apartment trilogy (Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby) with the classic, isolated tension of ‘80s winter horror like John Carpenter’s The Thing or David Cronenberg’s The Brood.
