The return of film?

from Wildlife and Adventure Photography · host Graham Elliott

Send us Fan MailI recently read that, for the first time in decades, Eastman Kodak have started recruiting technicians. It seems that a new generation is discovering film and the creative options it offers. If you have never used a film camera, and you're interested in knowing more, I hope this podcast will help. The operation of the camera is slightly different. Obviously the film needs to be loaded and removed and in many cameras the film speed must be manually set (some read the barcode on the film canister). In-built light meters will be different to what you're used to on DSLR's and most SLR's didn't use auto-focus.I'll talk about these aspects and the elephant in the room; the film itself. What ASA (the direct equivalent of ISO) should you choose (it stays the same for the whole roll), when should I 'pish' or 'pull' the film speed?Should I use black and white or colour film? What are the differences between different manufacturers films (and film brands from the same manufacturer)? What's right for my style of photography? Should I use negative or colour reversal (slide) film (available for both colour and black and white)? What film length? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a medium format camera (I'll leave large format out of it for now!)?I'll try to give you some insights into these questions in this podcast. And, if you like this podcast, I;d be grateful if you would let other people know about it.It's time for another podcast...
