Out past the last gas station on Old Wire Road, just outside a town called Marrow, Georgia, there stood an all-night tire shop. The sign said '24 Hour Roadside' but the light in the bay never went out. It was July, 2019, and a woman named Cora pulled in at a quarter to three with a shredded rear tire. She didn't expect anyone to be there. But the man who came out from under the lift was wearing a uniform that had dried blood on the collar and his name tag read 'Lemuel' — and he knew her name before she said it. He knew her high school. He knew about the baby she'd lost the year before. And he told her something about the tire that didn't make sense: that she'd driven through a patch of broken glass that hadn't been on the road when she started.
