The experiences of delivery riders bring many of China’s wider economic challenges together: employment pressure, technological change, consumer convenience and the search for a more productive model of growth. Perhaps that is why understanding their lives can also help us understand China today a little better, whether we view it through a Western lens or from within China itself.
