Romans 1:17 proclaims the great comfort of the gospel: that God’s righteousness is not something we must earn, but something he freely gives to us in Christ, received by faith alone. This truth brought peace to Martin Luther’s anxious conscience and became a light to the church in a darkened age. As we reflect on Luther’s life through this text, we are reminded that our only comfort in life and in death is found in belonging to Jesus Christ, clothed in his righteousness,and called to live each day by faith in him.
