The Ripple Effect of Mercy: Remembering 9/11 Through Love and Forgiveness | Fr. Dan Cambra, MIC

from Homilies from the National Shrine · host The Marian Fathers

As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, Fr. Dan Cambra, MIC, invites us to remember the souls who lost their lives and those who courageously made difficult decisions to protect and serve others. Reflecting on moments in history when Christians were called to defend others, he reminds us that we may never fully understand how our choices will affect the world years later. When we seek to do the will of the Father, even a single act of faith, prayer, courage, or sacrifice can create a ripple effect far beyond what we can see. In the same spirit, we remember the first responders, rescuers, and clergy who ministered amid the devastation of 9/11, including Fr. Mychal Judge, OFM, who offered prayer and spiritual comfort to those in need.At the heart of this teaching is Christ’s command to love one another and to choose mercy rather than hatred or retaliation. Jesus prayed from the Cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,” giving us the greatest example of forgiveness. We are called to carry that mercy into our own lives by praying for those who have gone before us, forgiving those who have hurt us, and responding to hatred with the love of Christ. As we celebrate the annual Mercy for Souls Conference, let us especially pray for the souls of those who died on September 11, for their families, for those who risked or gave their lives to save others, and for all people throughout the world who have become victims of hatred, violence, and retaliation. May our prayers and acts of mercy continue the ripple effect of God’s love for generations to come.Readings for September 12th 2026: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/091226.cfm© 2026 Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception.
