A principios de noviembre de 1980, Bruce Springsteen alcanzó el #1 con su álbum ʻThe Riverʼ. El doble LP actúa como bisagra entre la etapa de rebeldía de su juventud y sus álbumes de corte político. Gran parte de las letras de los 50 temas que escribió Springsteen para este disco están inspiradas en la crisis de la construcción que vivió EEUU en los años 70. Pero en este álbum paradójico también hay hueco para temas de corte más festivo, como ʻHungry Heartʼ, un tema que recibió el aplauso de John Lennon. Springsteen quiso que ʻThe Riverʼ reflejase todas sus facetas y optó por la fórmula del disco doble, el único de su extensa carrera.
