After Fort Sumter was taken by the Confederates, Lincoln calls for 75,000 volunteers to join the fight. Virginia declines to send troops and officially secedes from the nation. This leads to minor confrontations between Union gun boats and Confederate shore batteries at Gloucester Point, Sewell's Point, Aquia Creek, and the first land battle of the war which took place at Philippe, Virginia.
