The Rocks Bear Witness
Researchers studying salt marsh sediments found that some mud deposits can harden into sedimentary rock much faster than previously assumed. Certain bacteria drive chemical reactions that rapidly produce stony mineral formations. The findings demonstrate that rock formation can occur on surprisingly short timescales under specific conditions.
