What this episode covers
Pastor transitions from the focus of chapter 4 of bringing glory to God and begins chapter 5. Elders are not superior or inferior to the church members or pastor. Peter had an eye witness of the suffering of Christ. We anticipate judgement that precipitates righteousness. We anticipate also a heavenly home as partakers of glory. Elders, shepherds, and overseers are talking about the same man. Churches are not meant to have hierarchies. Churches want their pastors to be ranchers who build up, crack the whip, and get everyone going. But the Bible calls for shepherds. You can be a rancher from sitting on a horse, but you can't shepherd from a horse. Sheep need to hear the shepherd's voice and occasionally need to be carried. If one sheep is missing he leaves the ninety-nine and searches for the one lost sheep. He may need to break its leg to bring it back and prevent it from wandering again. Bishops/professors whould never teach and be disconnected from pastoring a church. Church leaders should never just be administrative roles. Giving the church role hierarchy can elevate or diminish the role and remove the role's responsibilities. You cannot pator a flock remotely. Pastoring is personal. Ministry needs to be done personally within reach, sight, sound, and touch. Pastors have to make sure the church is well-fed. You cannot work if you're malnourished. Pastors also have to make sure the church is well-exercised. Faith is your beliefs in action.
