The Romanovs' Forbidden Gardens: Peterhof's Secret History

While the Winter Palace and Fabergé eggs dominate the popular imagination of the Romanov dynasty, there was another stage for imperial power that demanded equal spectacle and cost more than a small war: the Peterhof Grand Palace and its surrounding gardens. This episode explores how Peter the Great imported the concept of Versailles to the Baltic coast, not just as a vacation home, but as a political statement of Russia’s arrival in Europe. We trace the engineering marvels behind the 'Russian Versailles,' the forced labor of serfs who built the fountains, and the tragic irony of these golden halls becoming symbols of isolation during the revolutions of 1917. Through the eyes of architects like Andrei Kvareni and gardeners like Ivan Kolyobkin, we uncover the human cost behind the gold leaf and the water jets, revealing a dynasty that prized aesthetic perfection over social stability until it was too late. #Peterhof #RomanovDynasty #RussianHistory #PeterTheGreat #Versailles #ImperialRussia #Serfdom #Architecture #Fountains #BalticCoast #CatherineI #ElizabethPetrovna #NicholasII #WinterPalace #Kvareni #NevaBay #Hermitage #Revolution1917 #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
