The Romanovs' Last Ball: 1903 and the Winter Palace

In February 1903, the Romanovs threw the most opulent costume ball in Russian history. The Winter Palace glittered with jewel-encrusted boyar gowns and fur-trimmed kaftans as Nicholas II and Alexandra dressed as Tsar Alexei and his consort. But beneath the surface of this lavish spectacle lay an empire already fracturing—revolution was brewing, and the ball would be the dynasty's final great display of imperial grandeur. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the famous 1903 ball: its planning by the Hermitage director Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the elaborate period costumes based on 17th-century dress, the presence of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna and other key courtiers, and the political tensions that made the event so poignant. They also examine the ball's place in the broader arc of Romanov decline, from the Khodynka tragedy to the Russo-Japanese War, and how it has been remembered—including its recreation in the 1997 Russian film 'The Barber of Siberia.' This episode offers a vivid window into the last gasp of Romanov splendor, where art, history, and impending doom collided. #Romanovs #1903CostumeBall #WinterPalace #NicholasII #TsarAlexei #GrandDuchessElizabeth #IvanVsevolozhsky #ImperialRussia #RussianHistory #Fabergé #CourtFashion #DynastyDecline #BarberOfSiberia #Khodynka #RussoJapaneseWar #History #FexingoHistory #Podcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
