The Romanovs' Shadow War: The Secret Treaty of Björkö

In 1905, as Russia reeled from revolution and defeat in the Russo-Japanese War, Nicholas II secretly signed a defensive alliance with Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany at the Finnish island of Björkö. This episode explores the treaty's origins, the personal diplomacy between two autocrats, and how it nearly redrew the map of Europe—until the tsar's own ministers buried it. We trace the secret railway negotiations, the role of Admiral Birilev, the dramatic confrontation with Wilhelm, and the quiet sabotage by Sergei Witte and Alexander Izvolsky. A tale of royal vanity, geopolitical miscalculation, and the fragile machinery of European alliances before the First World War. #Björkö #NicholasII #WilhelmII #SecretTreaty #RussoJapaneseWar #1905Revolution #SergeiWitte #AlexanderIzvolsky #GermanRussianRelations #TsaristDiplomacy #BalticSea #FinnishIslands #EuropeanAlliances #RomanovDynasty #ImperialRussia #History #FexingoHistory #DiplomaticHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
