The Roving Dr. Njai Makes a House Call

Madison and the WORT Community are very lucky to have a connection to Dr. Alhaji Njai, PanAfrican and global citizen. That’s not only because he’s an expert on Ebola, much in the news now, but also because he has the energy and intellect to travel and work and make connections throughout the world and then share his impressions with us. We deeply value the time he takes to tell us about things we would not normally know about. Alhaji did not disappoint when he stopped in the World View studio for a conversation. He did talk about Ebola, the demise of USAID as we knew it and how that is making a difference to efforts to contain and stop the spread of such a dangerous disease. He talked about the work he and other African doctors and scientists are doing to build a network of African experts and technicians to improve African health and address health emergencies more effectively, especially through the African Center for Disease Control and the African Union. In addition Alhaji talked about the joys and challenges he saw and experienced in his travels. On the plus side were opportunities to enjoy varieties of African food, the collaboration of his peers and experiencing music in the places he visited. He particularly mentioned his continuing wonder at the resilience of people he encountered. On the disappointing and more distressing side were continuing neocolonialism, the displacement of people from their homes for many reasons, the lack of transparency eroding democratic systems and still too much corruption, exploitation and wastefulness of resources. And Alhaji did chat a bit about soccer, especially because play for the World Cup is about to begin and he is dreaming of an African country winning the title, if not this year, some day.
