The Sabbath
from Messages with Pastor Micah · host Pastor Micah Smith
This sermon steps away from Luke for a week to explore the biblical foundation of the Sabbath and why it becomes such an important point of conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders. Beginning with creation in Genesis and tracing the Sabbath through the Law, Nehemiah, Isaiah, and Jewish tradition, we see that God established the Sabbath not as a burden, but as a gift of rest, worship, and trust. The message also examines how the Pharisees developed detailed rules around Sabbath observance in an effort to protect God’s law. While these traditions often began with good intentions, they eventually turned a day designed for rest into another source of labor and legalism. Ultimately, the Sabbath points beyond a particular day to Jesus Christ, who offers true spiritual rest. Yet that doesn’t mean Christians no longer need intentional rest. We were created with limits. Setting aside time to stop striving, worship God, and trust Him with our responsibilities is an act of faith. Jesus is our Sabbath rest, and because He is Lord of the Sabbath, we can learn to lay down our burdens and truly rest in Him.
