"The Sabbath Principle"

from Crossgate Church Podcasts

Our teaching today is about the "Sabbath principle." Even though the term Sabbath sounds almost archaic in our culture but if we are honest with ourselves, we need to obey this principle now more than ever. Check out this quote, "The American dream – the belief that hard work always guarantees upward mobility – has for more than a century made the U.S. obsessed with material success and the exhaustive striving required to earn it." (Derek Thompson – The Atlantic) The Sabbath precedent (Genesis 2:1-3) In Genesis 2, God finishes his six days of creative work . . . then He rests. "So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all His work that He had done in creation." The Sabbath Prohibition (Exodus 20:8-11) God now gives specific instruction regarding the importance of keeping the Sabbath holy. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work . . . " God clearly says to rest – nothing more or less. The Sabbath Principle (Mark 2:23-28) The bottom line is that Sabbath, in a Christian sense, is: Temporarily ceasing from work to experience physical rest Recreation through (1) meaningful relationships and (2) enjoying what God has given. Resting physically, emotionally, and spiritually ultimately in Jesus. You can click HERE to view the graphics that Pastor Phil created to help illustrate the sabbath principle.
