On August 24, 410, the Visigothic king Alaric and his army entered Rome through the Salarian Gate and sacked the city for three days. It was the first time in roughly eight hundred years that Rome had fallen to a foreign force. Alaric had spent a decade seeking land, grain, and a Roman command before Rome's own government turned him into its enemy.
