A truck stop off Route 17 in central New Mexico, just past the cattle auction yards. June 2022, around 2 AM. I stopped for coffee and found a door I'd never noticed before, painted the color of dried turmeric. The night manager said it had been there since the place was built in 1954, but she'd never seen anyone go through it. That should have been the end of it. But I kept coming back, and the door kept changing—the paint seemed deeper some nights, and once I thought I heard something breathing on the other side.
